Michèle Flournoy

“Our technical edge is one of our advantages. But the real strength of our military is the people. We have a professional, all-volunteer force and are able to recruit some of the best and brightest in the country. Today, we have the finest military in the world.”

As under secretary of defense for policy from 2009 to 2012, Michèle Angelique Flournoy was the highest-ranking woman ever to serve at the Pentagon. In 2007, she cofounded the Center for New American Security (CNAS), dedicated to developing strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies.
